Newton Running Shoe Review: Pt 2

Submitted by Customers Revenge on Wed, 08/26/2009 - 13:52

I got my brand new Newtons a couple of weeks ago and wrote an initial review Newton Running Shoes: Run Faster and Better. I've since run with them several more times, including a long run, and have more to report.

1) I failed on my first long run.
I tested the shoes on a run of 30km at my normal pace. To my extreme dismay I could not finish the run!

After about 10km my feet really started to feel those lugs. They were pressing into the middle of my foot with each step like I was stepping on a small bump. Of course the lugs do create a small bump and maybe that's the way they're supposed to feel, but as the distance adds up the bump gets annoying.

As I approached 15km my legs began to feel sapped of their strength. I was more tired by the halfway point than I would normally be at the end of the run. Eventually I did not want to continue running any longer.

This is surprising because on the shorter runs the shoes feel quite wonderful. Very light and they encourage the mid-foot strike. I may try them again on a long run, or I may just limit their use to shorter runs so that I keep refining my strike.

2) The shoes look awful.
I am guessing that they chose the yellow and orange colors so that they can be distinctive. That they are. I get people doing double-takes whenever I run by with my bright-as-the-sun yellow shoes. I didn't care at first but after the 100th stare and sneer I realized that they just didn't have to use such bad colors.
